Ornithology
Ornithology is a composition by Little Benny Harris and Charlie Parker from 1946 that became the jazz standard . At first the song was an instrumental number; since 1953 there is a text made famous by Babs Gonzales .
composition
Like other bebop heads , the piece is based on the harmonies of a standard, here on How High the Moon : In a solo that Benny Harris played in 1945 to a version of this track recorded by Don Byas , a large part of the melody from Ornithology was heard ; the first eleven notes, however, come from Charlie Parker and were first heard in a solo that Parker improvised in Jay McShann's composition The Jumpin 'Blues in 1942 . The 32-bar composition is in the song form AA '.
The way to the jazz standard
Ornithology is part of the classical bebop repertoire ; it was recorded over fourteen times by Parker alone between 1946 and 1954.
Ornithology has been recorded by musicians as diverse as Anthony Braxton , Sheila Jordan , Biréli Lagrène , Red Mitchell , Gerry Mulligan , Oscar Peterson , Dave Pike , Bud Powell , Tony Scott , Archie Shepp , Sonny Stitt and George Wallington . There were even recordings with three saxophones ( Tenor Conclave , 1992) and with a string quartet ( Modern String Quartet , 1986).
