Benny Harris

"Little" Benny Harris (* 23. April 1919 in New York City ; † 11. May 1975 in San Francisco ) was an American trumpeter of modern jazz . He is considered an important supporting character in bebop .

Career

In 1939 Harris played first with Tiny Bradshaw , then in 1941 and 1943 with Earl Hines' orchestra . He was a fixture on 52nd Street in the early 1940s and participated in many jam sessions (e.g. at Minton's Playhouse ) where he played with Benny Carter , John Kirby , Coleman Hawkins , Don Byas and Thelonious Monk . From 1944 to 1945 Benny Harris was a member of the Boyd Raeburn Band. As a composer of Ornithology , Crazeology , Reets and I (often byBud Powell ) and Wahoo , which is based on the piece Perdido , Harris no longer played much from the mid-1940s. During this time he was involved in recordings of Don Byas, Clyde Hart and Charlie Parker. In 1949 he played briefly with Dizzy Gillespie's big band and appeared in 1952 with Charlie Parker . He then moved to California and was no longer active as a musician.
