Theodor Mintrop (born April 7, 1814 in Essen-Heidhausen , † June 30, 1870 in Düsseldorf ) was a German painter of the Romantic period and the Düsseldorf School of Painting .

Life

Mintrop was born on Gut Barkhoven in Heidhausen. Up to the age of 30 he served on his brother's estate. The Düsseldorf artist Eduard Geselschap , who had become aware of the autodidact together with Heinrich Oecklinghaus, managed to get Wilhelm von Schadow to enter the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 1844 despite his age . Geselschap took Mintrop into a shared apartment on Jägerhofstrasse for the rest of his life , which he did not even finish when he married Lotte Rose in 1856. Another friend of Mintrop's was Fritz Roeber , who later became the director of the art academy. There Mintrop studied with Theodor Hildebrandt , Carl Ferdinand Sohn and Friedrich Wilhelm Schadow . In 1854 he rose to the master class "as a very significant talent" . The extraordinary circumstance of the discovery of the "natural talent" and his idiosyncratic style led to him being celebrated as the "new Giotto " and "child prodigy of romanticism" ( Richard Klapheck ). Gottfried Sello praised him in 1963 as "a rural Raffael ". Like many other painters of the Düsseldorf School, Mintrop belonged to the artists' association Malkasten . A friend and successor of Mintrop was the painter Friedrich Geselschap .

His works include The Album for Minna from the years 1855 to 1857 with washed and watercolored drawings on 72 sheets and the fairy tale book König Heinzelmann's Liebe published posthumously in 1875 with 70 illustrations. In the succession of the arabesques and the grotesques of Raphael et al. a. and possibly inspired by Genelli's multi-figure compositions , he created an allegorical glorification of May wine in 1869 , which shows the influence of the Düsseldorf painting school and is now owned by the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne.

An altarpiece by Theodor Mintrop hangs in the former St. Ludgerus Abbey Church in Essen-Werden.

Many of Mintrop's drawings are archived in the Museum Kunstpalast (Düsseldorf) on loan from the Düsseldorf Art Academy.

The Mintropplatz in Düsseldorf and the Mintropstrasse in Düsseldorf and Essen were named after him.
