The Modern String Quartet (MSQ) is a Munich string quartet that plays classical and jazz-related music.

General

The quartet had its origins in a commitment to free improvisation for a slide show.

The quartet has given over a thousand concerts worldwide and has presented itself at the Burghausen Jazz Week , the Viersen Jazz Festival , the Berlin Festival and other festivals in Tel Aviv , Nancy and Belgrade . It has recorded numerous CDs and worked with many musicians, such as in 1988 with Konstantin Wecker , Mercedes Sosa and Joan Baez .

The music is composed or arranged in-house. Improvisation is part of every performance.
