Stotzas the Younger ( Stotzas junior , actually Johannes ; † 546 in Constantinople ) was a Moorish military leader. He rebelled against the rule of the Eastern Roman emperor Justinian I in Africa in 545 .

Life

Since the reconquest of the North African provinces by Belisarius in 533/34, the East Romans have been confronted several times with Moorish and Vandal uprisings. After the suppression of the Stotzas rebellion (545), the rebels elected Johannes as their leader, giving him the nickname Stotzas junior . He supported the vandal attempt at restoration of the dux Numidiae Guntarith , who seized the province of Africa proconsularis in the spring of 546 and had the imperial governor Areobindus killed in Carthage . When Guntarith began purges and mass executions to consolidate his regime, the strategos Artabanes arranged for the usurper to be murdered at a feast five weeks after the outbreak of the rebellion. John, who had taken refuge in a church, was arrested by Artabanos and sent in chains to Constantinople, where he is said to have been crucified .
