geography

Unkelbach is located 20 kilometers south of Bonn and 50 kilometers north of Koblenz in a valley, from where the Unkelbach flows for another kilometer through a side valley of the same name into the Rhine . In the valley, the place expands in an east-west direction for about 1.5 kilometers; in the north-south direction the extension is about half a kilometer. The center of the old town center is about 90 meters above sea level. In the north and south as well as in the west of the district there are elevations from 214 meters to 236 meters above sea level. In terms of traffic, Unkelbach is part of the Rheinschiene and can be reached with the left Rheintalbahn (Oberwinter station) and the B9.

history

Unkelbach was first mentioned in a document as Unchaberhi in 853 , but the area was also settled in early history and Roman times. The village chapel was built by monks around 1200. Since 1383 Unkelbach had its own aldermen's seal. In 1660 the plague cross was erected in the church. In addition to numerous other monasteries, Deutz Abbey had properties in Unkelbach. From 1550 to the end of the 18th century Unkelbach belonged to the Jülich Sinzig office . In Unkelbach, there was evidence of a high lordship held as early as 1560 ( high court ).

From 1815 the place in the Unkelbachtal belonged to Prussia . In 1817 Unkelbach had 72 houses and 307 inhabitants. The first civic efforts came to fruition: In 1852 Unkelbach received its own fire fighting syringe and in 1857 a night watchman was hired. Between 1898 and 1903 the stately reconstruction of the parish church of St. Remigius was carried out.

As part of the municipal reorganization in Rhineland-Palatinate, the previously independent municipality of Unkelbach was dissolved on June 7, 1969 and assigned to the newly formed city of Remagen. The community square at the village community center was inaugurated in 2002, and one year later the village community celebrated the 1,150th anniversary of the first documentary mention.

The small village has a parish church dedicated to Saint Remigius . The neo-Gothic building was built from 1899 according to plans by the Bonn architect Johann Adam Rüppel and consecrated in 1903. The new building replaced a previous church from the 13th century that had become too small. The most important part of the visible furnishings was taken from this: a representation of the enthroned Mother of God from the end of the 13th century, the Unkelbach Madonna . One of the three bells is believed to date from around 1300. This bell is one of the oldest in the Trier diocese. In 1955 two more bells were cast in Saarburg. The peal sounds with the opening notes of the Te Deum . In 1967 the roof structure and the bell tower were renovated.

In 1822 the first mining contract for a quarry in northern Unkelbach, the Dungkopf, was concluded . From 1881 a horse-drawn railway was built from the quarry to the Rhine. In 1907 the end of viticulture came, the main employer of the place from the beginning of the 1950s to the 1960s was the basalt quarry Dungkopf , whereby many workers at that time were still farming on the side. Of the almost 400 employed Unkelbach, around 30 percent were employed in the quarry. The village structure was also shaped by the local, smaller craft businesses around this time. Some arable land was leased or lay fallow. In 1970 there were only 14 workers left in the quarry. In 1997 the mining of the basalt was stopped. The quarry has been idle since the demolition of all technical systems.
