The Jaén tram is a tram line in the Spanish city of Jaén that was completed in 2011 and never went into regular service. It runs 4.7 kilometers north from the center of the city. Construction work on the railway began in April 2009. After a brief free trial run that began on May 3, 2011, operations were discontinued. From June 18, 2012, test drives were carried out again for one week. The route has ten stops and connects shopping centers, industrial areas and other important points in the city. There were also originally plans to build a second line that would connect Jaén to other cities in the surrounding area.

Planning and construction

The construction of the tram line cost 74.8 million euros and was carried out by a consortium of the following companies: Alstom , Gea21, Ghenova, Inabensa, Mipelsa and Straßenbau Morales. The traffic area on the most important streets of the city was fundamentally restructured so that the areas along the tram route were upgraded in terms of urban development. The bus route network was also redesigned. The vehicles were procured from the French manufacturer Alstom.

Route

Line 1 runs above ground in the urban area of Jaén. It is equipped with its own track structure throughout and is therefore only subject to the effects of road traffic at intersections.

Originally planned extensions

The possibility of building further routes was announced, which would connect different parts of the city and surrounding communities to the center. One of the possible routes would be along Avenida de Andalucía and Carretera de Córdoba, from where it would leave the urban area to reach Torredelcampo, Jamilena, Torredonjimeno, Martos , Mancha Real, Las Infantas and Mengíbar.

Stops and vehicles

Each tram stop was designed individually, and each tram got its own color scheme. In connection with this, the city council of Jaén organized an ideas competition for their design. The competition comprised three categories: elementary and secondary school students, high school and vocational school students, and senior citizens' center visitors. A game console, a laptop and a two-day trip to Barcelona for two people were advertised for each of the categories. The participation period ended on May 7, 2010 with 5455 proposals submitted. A few days later, on May 18th, the winners of the ideas competition were announced. In addition, it was announced that the government of Andalusia will finance the vehicles through the public company Ferrocarriles de la Junta de Andalucía , which will transfer them to the city of Jaén for a monthly usage fee.

Rolling stock

Five Citadis 302 trams from the French manufacturer Alstom were procured for the Jaén tram . The lanes are 32 meters long, 2.4 meters wide and 3.2 meters high. They have a low- floor wagon floor over their entire length so that they are completely barrier-free . In addition, there are options for attaching bicycles in each module. The total capacity is 182 passengers.

Workshops and depots

The Jaén tram depot covers an area of 20,000 square meters and is located at the Vaciacostales terminal on the former site of the local police. A new police station has been set up in the Expansión Norte district .

Archaeological finds

The work to build the tram uncovered many archaeological finds of great value. A total of 25,000 items were found, recovered and cataloged. Outstanding finds are 120 human bodies that were sent to the Swedish city of Uppsala for analysis . Archaeological finds were found in six different sections of the route:

  • Section 1: It is at the height of the Hermanitas de los Pobres , where an Islamic farm (a weekend house) was found, which was built in two phases: during the Caliphate of Cordoba (10th to 11th centuries) and in the Almohad period (12th to 13th centuries).
  • Section 2: It is located between the Plaza de los Perfumes and the Plaza Jaén por la Paz . Fragments from the Copper Age (huts, furrows and post holes) as well as a water pipe from the Roman Empire and remains of the old train station were found here.
  • Section 3: It is located in the Plaza Jaén por la Paz . A residential area from the time of the Caliphate of Cordoba was found here over structures from prehistory that were part of the large village of Marroquíes Bajos .
  • Section 4: This section runs along Avenida Doctor Eduardo García-Triviño. The drainage of Marroquíes Bajos and damaged structures of houses from the Copper Age were found.
  • Section 5: It is located next to the incubator. Huts were found that were used for burial purposes, where corpses were buried in a sitting position, surrounded by animal remains. There was a burial place with a diameter of nine meters, which was apparently the largest in the area of the Marroquíes Bajos .
  • Section 6: This is the area on which the park and ride area was laid out. A Roman aqueduct was found.

Controversy and shutdown

The then opposition party in the Jaén Council, the Partido Popular , launched a large-scale campaign against the construction of the tram in the city, accompanied by a collection of signatures. It was also criticized that the planning was not expanded in the direction of the southern periphery - after San Felipe, el Tomillo and la Glorieta - which are even more cut off from the center and the expansion area. In contrast, the government of Andalusia stressed that the tram would provide a new impetus for the city of Jaén.

Since the Partido Popular obtained an absolute majority of the votes in the local elections on May 22, 2011, the opening of the operational tram was politically prevented. On July 15, 2013, the city council finally decided not to operate the tram.

On May 10, 2018, the government of Andalusia and the municipality of Jaen signed an agreement to reactivate the tram. The Andalusian government has announced that it will pay 75% of the 1.5 million euros of the forecast annual operating costs, while the consistory will take over the remaining 25%.

On June 12, the city council reaffirmed this plan. The services of the tram are therefore necessary for the metropolitan region. This confirmation is required to justify the public interest.
