The Oran tram ( Arabic ترامواي وهران) is a tram network in operation since May 2, 2013 in the city of Oran , Algeria's second largest city. The first section covers a length of 18.7 km and 32 stations and connects Sidi Maarouf in the west of the city with the center and the municipality of Es Senia in the south-east.

history

Tram network 1942

The first tram opened in Oran in 1898 and the network soon expanded to six lines before it was shut down in 1950, largely for economic reasons.

In 2006, a feasibility study for the construction of a new tram was carried out by the French company Ingerop, after which work on the new route began in 2009 under the direction of TRAMNOUR.

Commercial operation of the first section, which comprised 18.7 km and 32 stations, began after several delays on May 2, 2013. The official opening took place a day earlier by the Algerian transport minister Amar Tou and the Wali von Oran, Abdekmalek Boudiaf.

The construction of the first section was accompanied by several urban development measures, such as the redesign and planting of several streets and squares. The total costs are estimated at 400 million euros.

business

The Oran tram runs from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., every 4 minutes at peak times.

On May 24, 2012, the RATP Group took over the operation and maintenance of all Algerian trams, including the Oran ones, through a joint venture. RATP Dev operates this joint venture, the "Company for Tram Operations" (SETRAM), at 49% alongside ETUSA, which holds 36% of the shares, and Metro of Algiers (EMA), which holds 15%. SETRAM is therefore responsible for the operation, operational planning and maintenance as well as maintenance of the Oran tram for a period of ten years.

vehicles

The Oran tram has a fleet of 30 Alstom Citadis 302 trains, which were manufactured at Alstom's Santa Perpetua de Mogoda plant in Spain. The delivery of the vehicles was completed in autumn 2011. A train has a capacity of 325 seats (72 seats and 253 standing places), as well as air conditioning and a passenger information system in both Arabic and French. All trains and stops are designed to be low-floor, making them usable for people with limited mobility.

course

The only line of the Oran tram to date has served Sidi Maarouf in the west of the city, Hai Sabah, the campus of the University of Science and Technology (USTO), the courthouse, Dar El Beida, the plateau district of Saint-Michel, the city center, M'dina El, since 2013 Jadida, Baker and Es Senia.

Planning

Several extensions to the tram network are already planned:

  • an extension to the north between the Sidi Maarouf bus station and Hatab Benarba of 8.6 km and 12 stations
  • two fork extensions: one 5 km long from the current terminus Es Senia to Oran Es Sénia Airport , the other from the USTO station to Bir El Djir (16.5 km). Both expansions include a total of 28 new stations.
