history
There has been tram traffic in Algiers since 1898. At the heyday at the beginning of the 1930s , there were a total of three companies whose networks were not connected to one another:
- The Société des tramways algériens operated two lines on a track width of 1055 mm at 600 V operating voltage.
- The Société anonyme des Tramways et Messageries du Sahel operated a single, 6.4 km long line.
- The Société des Chemins de fer sur route d'Algérie (CFRA) operated a very extensive network of interurban trams . In its prime, this company maintained more than a dozen lines, several of which were over 40 km long.
Many of these routes were replaced by bus routes as early as the 1930s. By early 1960, all trams in Algiers were shut down and partially replaced by trolleybuses .
