Riga tram network (2019) |
The Riga Tram ( Tramvaju Rīgā ) is one of three tram networks in Latvia and opened on August 23, 1882. It has nine lines that travel the network over a total length of 54.7 kilometers. The 252 cars in the fleet are housed in three depots.
history
On August 23, 1882, the first horse-drawn tram line was opened in Riga . The operation was carried out with 95 horses. From 1900 the network was electrified by the Rigaer Tram Aktien-Gesellschaft. After Liepāja (Libau), Riga now has the second oldest electric tram network in the Baltic States . The first electrically operated line ran from July 23, 1900 on Alexanderstrasse. From 1901 to 1914 nine new lines with a total length of around 50 kilometers were opened. In 1914 the tram had 16 lines. In the previous year around 52.1 million passengers were carried.
Before and after the First World War , rail transport services fell. In 1928 there were nine lines that carried 48.2 million passengers. After the Second World War , the status quo was largely retained for the time being.
In the 1950s and 1960s the tram has been increasingly buses and O buses displaced and set a plurality of lines. The decline dragged on into the 1980s and ended with the opening of a line to Imanta in 1984.
