Sheffield Supertram is a modern tram network in Sheffield , England . It's 18 miles long and connects the city center with Middlewood and Malin Bridge to the northwest, Meadowhall to the northeast, Herdings Park and Halfway to the southeast. The track width is 1435 mm.
Route network
The construction of the route network began in 1991. The first section was opened on March 21, 1994, the penultimate on October 23, 1995 put into operation. On October 25, 2018, the extension to Rotherham went into operation with two stations. The trains there are running for the first time in Great Britain as tram-trains on a rail freight route, which has an overhead contact line (750 volts DC ) and is connected to the tram network via a 160 meter long connecting curve.
There are four lines. Plans include new routes to Dore, Fulwood and Maltby.
- Yellow line: Middlewood - Hillsborough - Cathedral - Arena - Meadowhall Interchange
- Blue Line: Malin Bridge - Hillsborough - Cathedral - Sheffield Station - Gleadless Townend - Halfway
- Purple line: Herdings Park - Gleadless Townend - Sheffield Station - Cathedral (during rush hour continue to Arena - Meadowhall Interchange)
- Tram train: Cathedral - Rotherham Parkgate

From 1992, Siemens-Duewag acquired 25 three-part Supertram trains for the tram network . Sheffield received seven Citylink trains for tram-train operations . The latter can also operate with an alternating voltage of 25 kV 50 Hz, which is currently not used.
