Walldorf tram

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The tram Walldorf was a 1902-1954 existing tram service in Württemberg, Baden- town Walldorf (Baden) . The only line traveled the 2.85-kilometer route from the Hotel Astoria at the Protestant church in Walldorf to the Wiesloch-Walldorf station on the Rhine Valley Railway . The Walldorf municipal tram operated until 1945 , then the Heidelberg tram and mountain railway (HSB) until it was closed .

history

The meter-gauge tram was opened on March 1, 1902 as a horse-drawn tram between Walldorf and the west side of the state train station, after the Wiesloch tram was dismantled the previous year . On February 22, 1907, the railway was electrified and extended over the state railway to the station forecourt on the east side. The speed was 22 km / h outside of town, 12 km / h inside Walldorf and 15 km / h on the access ramp to the station bridge.

Around 1910, plans came up for the first time that provided for the expansion of the Walldorf tram, including the Heidelberg – Wiesloch tram, to form a ring connection between Heidelberg  - Kirchheim  - Sandhausen  - Walldorf - Wiesloch  - Heidelberg. The city continued to implement these plans until it was discontinued.

A few months after the end of the Second World War , HSB took over management of the railway. The corresponding purchase agreement was signed on November 1, 1946. The still planned expansion to the ring connection was opposed by the electrification of the Rhine Valley Railway, which would have made it necessary to raise the bridge. In addition, a bypass road was planned on parts of the road used by the tram. Although efforts were made to rebuild the line on its own route, the HSB stopped tram operations on August 1, 1954 and replaced it with an extension of the bus line from Kirchheim that was set up on September 8, 1948.
