Vienna type E tram

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Type E is a series of the Vienna tram . This is about six-axis and for the way traffic designed articulated cars in high-floor design , the various 1959-1990 in three variants of Simmering-Graz-Pauker (SGP) and Lohner were built and some are still in use today. They were built as licensed buildings for the Duewag articulated wagons, which are particularly popular in Germany .

From 1959 to 1962 SGP produced 30 and Lohner 59 vehicles of the type E , but their engine power was too low for the use of sidecars and it was decided to build the further developed series E 1 .

From 1966 to 1976 the type E 1 vehicles were produced by SGP (238 units) and Lohner (100 units). From 1971 only conductorless vehicles were completed and the older ones were gradually equipped for operation without conductors. From 2009, the cars were equipped with rear-view mirrors, as there had been several accidents. The two cars 4866 and 4867 were converted for use on the Vienna Ring Tram (VRT). In 2013 it was planned that the E 1 cars would be parked by 2017. It is now assumed that E 1 cars will be used until around 2020 and E 2 cars until 2025.

The E 1 railcars have 40 seats and 65 standing places. They run either solo or with the sidecar types c 3 or c 4 .

When the production of the E 1 vehicles was stopped, the plans for the next generation E 2 were already in place. It is based on the Mannheim type and differs from its predecessors, apart from the design, through a number of technical innovations and fold-out steps. The interior has also been redesigned. The first vehicle has been in operation since August 1978. From 2009 all vehicles were fitted with rear-view mirrors to prevent further incidents. In 1990 production of the E 2 vehicles was discontinued. 98 cars were built by SGP and 24 by Bombardier.

The E 2 multiple units have 44 seats and 58 standing places. They usually run on schedule with c 5 sidecars, but are occasionally used solo.

For operation on the belt line of the Viennese electric light rail , the types E 2 and c 5 were derived from the externally very similar types E 6 and c 6 .
