The striped- faced quail ( Odontophorus balliviani ) is a little researched bird species from the family of toothed quails (Odontophoridae). It occurs in Peru and Bolivia .
features
The striped-faced quail reaches a size of 26 to 28 cm. The weight of the males is 311 grams, that of the females 324 grams. The hood and crown are chestnut-colored with a tan border. A red eye ring runs around the iris. A black stripe behind the eye extends to the edge of the neck. The plumage is predominantly brown. The throat is tan with white lines and strands that merge into diamond-shaped spots. The chest, stomach and flanks are bordered in black. The basic color of the chest and abdomen is brown. The back and rump are brown, mottled with black wavy lines. The shoulders and wings are brown with black and chestnut spots. The beak is black, the legs are dark lead in color. The female looks similar to the male, but has fewer white streaks on the throat. The young birds have not yet been described.

The striped-faced quail lives in subtropical cloud forests and boggy meadows at altitudes between 2,000 and 3,000 m.
Way of life
Little is known about the way of life of the striped-faced quail. The egg size is 38 × 26.8 mm.
status
The IUCN classifies the species in the category “not endangered” ( least concern ). Habitat degradation from deforestation poses a potential threat to the striped-faced quail. However, habitat access is difficult, so there are few records of this species in the wild. It is estimated that there are 50,000 copies.
