Jordi Sargatal

Jordi Sargatal Vicens (born July 27, 1957 in Figueres , Comarca Alt Empordà , Catalonia ) is a Catalan ornithologist , naturalist , conservationist and non-fiction author .

Life

Sargatal has been dedicated to nature since 1972, specializing in avifauna in wetlands . In March 1982 he was a founding member of the mosquito control service in the Bahía de Roses y del Bajo Ter and headed it until October 1985. From April 1984 to April 1998 he was director of the Parc Natural dels Aiguamolls de l'Empordà . As early as July 1976, he was one of a group of young activists who had demonstrated against the drainage of the Aiguamolls in view of plans to build a huge marina .

From March 1998 to the end of January 2009 he was director of the now defunct Territori i Paisatge Foundation of the financial services provider Caixa Catalunya , which campaigned for cooperation in nature conservation , in particular for the acquisition of nature reserves and landscape protection areas .

During the almost eleven years of the foundation's existence, important goals have been achieved, including the purchase of 24 natural areas with a total of 7,834 hectares, the signing of more than 60 cooperation agreements or area management over a total of approx. 136,000 hectares or the purchase of the logging rights for 142 hectares of mature forest in the Comarca Pallars Sobirà in the Pyrenees .

In addition, between the annual call for tenders and specific projects, both in the field of nature conservation and environmental education, the foundation was involved in more than 700 projects that benefited around 350 institutions. Sargatal founded the nature center Les Planes de Son near Alt Àneu and promoted initiatives to raise awareness of the environment, including various traveling exhibitions and the publication of environmental educational materials .

Sargatal has led several renaturation projects in wetlands, including in the Clot de Galvany Nature Park in collaboration with the Elche City Council , and in the Baix Ter Nature Park in collaboration with Ricardo Bofill's architecture workshop .

In the field of bird protection was Sargatal employees at Projecto Ibis Eremita where in 2002 the Natural Park Cabo de Gata in the south of the Iberian Peninsula , a resettlement project for the bald ibis was launched. In 1996 he participated as an expert at the 6th Conference of the Ramsar Convention in Brisbane , Australia , and in 1998 at an international company for the management of the wetlands in the Palo Verde National Park , Costa Rica .
