Stray field (geology)

Scattering ellipse of the Pultusk meteorites

A stray field is an area in which meteorites or tektites have spread as a result of an impact . Also satellite that the re-entry into the atmosphere break can produce a debris strewn field. A frequently found geometric shape of the scatter field is the so-called scatter ellipse . It usually occurs because a meteoroid hits the earth at an angle and breaks (fragments) in the atmosphere . Due to the air resistance, the fragments of different sizes are braked to different degrees. Due to Stokes' law , the braking effect is inversely proportional to the surface area of the meteorites. The small parts remain in the swarm of rubble and are also most influenced by wind. The fragments spread out in an elliptical shape, with the smaller pieces falling at the beginning and farthest from the semi-axis of the ellipse , while the larger meteorites mark the end. From the distribution of meteorite masses and the shape of the scattering ellipse, the direction and the angle of entry of the meteoroid can thus be approximately reconstructed.
