The Strichfleckige Ladybird or Strichfleckige scale insect ladybird ( Chilocorus bipustulatus ) is a beetle from the family of ladybirds (Coccinellidae).

features

The beetles are about 2.7 to 4 millimeters long. They are black or brown and have three small red spots on the wings , which are often fused into a line-shaped cross band. The head, antennae, legs and posterior ventral side are reddish in color. The black eyes are on the front side of the head. The feelers are 8-part.

Occurrence

The species is native to Europe and the Mediterranean. It is very common in the Mediterranean. As a natural enemy of scale insects , Chilocorus bipustulatus has now been introduced almost worldwide. Attempts to introduce the beetle species were made in the United States in 1905, 1915, and 1927. It finally succeeded in 1951 in the San Joaquin Valley in California.

Way of life

The beetles are seen almost all year round. They are often found on pines ( Pinus ) and fruit trees. The beetles are not particularly cold-resistant, which means that they usually do not survive particularly cold winters. The beetles' adults and larvae feed on shield, moth shield and aphids . The beetles are therefore used for biological pest control.
