The Strophocheilidae are a family of snails from the suborder of land snails (Stylommatophora). The nearly 50 species of the family are native to South America. The oldest members of the family come from Paleocene deposits.
features
The cases , up to 160 mm high, are right-hand wound. They can be highly conical, egg-shaped or, rarely, low-conical to flat. The mouth is relatively simple, with no lamellae or teeth. The mouth edges can be turned over and slightly thickened. The jaw is relatively thick and can be smooth or ribbed. The gills are of the mesurethra type. In the hermaphroditic genital apparatus, the inner wall of the penis is covered with numerous small nodes or papillae. A flagellum can be present or absent. The spermatic duct is mostly on the penis. The stem of the spermathek is connected to the spermoviduct by numerous fibers.
Geographical distribution and way of life
The family is geographically restricted to South America. The species in the family live in damp forests.
Systematics
The family is treated as a superfamily by Schileyko (1999). Bouchet & Rocroi (2005), on the other hand, place them in family rank to the superfamily Acavoidea . It is divided into two subfamilies (in Schileyko (1999) two families).
