Struisbaai is a coastal village in the Cape Agulhas municipality , Overberg district , Western Cape Province in South Africa . In 2011 the place had 3,877 inhabitants. The place is known for its 14 km long white sandy beach. It was founded in the middle of the 19th century; the fishing port is still in use today.
There are several theories about the origin of the name Struisbaai:
- either strawbay refers to the fishermen's huts built from straw in earlier times
- or derived from the Dutch word (bird) Struijs for frequently encountered in earlier times Ostriches
- or derived from the old Dutch word for “huge”, referring to the long beach
Attractions
- Hotagterklip Cottages , restored historic fishermen's houses at the entrance to the village, all are designated as national monuments. Some are now rented out as vacation homes.
- Anglican church, thatched with thatch, is a listed building
