Struisbaai is a coastal village in the Cape Agulhas municipality , Overberg district , Western Cape Province in South Africa . In 2011 the place had 3,877 inhabitants. The place is known for its 14 km long white sandy beach. It was founded in the middle of the 19th century; the fishing port is still in use today.

There are several theories about the origin of the name Struisbaai:

either strawbay refers to the fishermen's huts built from straw in earlier times
or derived from the Dutch word (bird) Struijs for frequently encountered in earlier times Ostriches
or derived from the old Dutch word for “huge”, referring to the long beach

Attractions

  • Hotagterklip Cottages , restored historic fishermen's houses at the entrance to the village, all are designated as national monuments. Some are now rented out as vacation homes.
  • Anglican church, thatched with thatch, is a listed building
