The Stryjskyj Park (formerly. Kiliński Park) is one of the oldest and most beautiful parks in Lviv , a landmark of the garden art national importance. It is located in the Sofiyivka district of the Halycjkyj district. It was considered the most beautiful park of the interwar period.

history

The history of the park goes back to the years 1876/1877, when city authorities at that time decided to set up a special place for walkers on the sandy hills, steep gorges and valleys not far from Lviv. The famous master of landscape art of the city of Lemberg, engineer Arnold Röhring , was commissioned to implement the project. In order to relocate avenues and garden paths for the new park, he was forced to demolish the former Stryiskyj cemetery, which was closed in 1823. In 1879, on the initiative of the City Council Stanisław Niemczynowski, the construction of the park began.

For the newly established park, plants and trees were brought from different corners of the world. 40,000 trees were planted, including spruce, maple, plane tree, exotic species such as red oak, tulip tree, beech, ginkgo etc. In 1887, the Lviv City Council headed the erection of the monument to Jan Kiliński - one of the participants in the uprising decided by Tadeusz Kościuszko . The memorial should stand in the newly established park, which has also been named Kilinsky Park. Construction of the monument, commissioned by the famous sculptor Julian Markowski, began in 1888 and opened on June 18, 1895. The name "Kilinsky Park" did not catch on, however, the name "Stryisky Park" was more popular and has remained to this day.

From June 5 to October 10, 1894, the Galician National Exhibition took place in Stryysky Park . In the run-up to the state exhibition, 130 exhibition pavilions were built in the upper part of the park in 1894. The most impressive were the Polish radio pavilion, the Balschewsky factory pavilion and the industrial pavilion. The famous panorama painting of the Battle of Racławice (painters Jan Styka , Wojciech Kossak and others) was shown during the exhibition .
