Tadeusz Kościuszko in the Battle of Racławice

The Panorama of Racławice (Polish: Panorama Racławicka ) is the only Polish work of art of its kind in Wrocław and is one of the most famous sights of the city. It is 15 m × 114 m = 1710 m² in size. The panorama picture shows the victory of the Polish army over the Russian in 1794 in the Battle of Racławice under the leadership of the Polish general Tadeusz Kościuszko .

The picture was published on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the battle after only nine months of creation on June 5, 1894 on the occasion of a national exhibition in Lwów (Lemberg) . The idea was provided by the well-known Lviv painter Jan Styka , who, together with the battle painter Wojciech Kossak , was in charge. Other contributors were: Teodor Axentowicz , Ludwig Boller , Tadeusz Popiel , Zygmunt Rozwadowski , Michał Sozański , Włodzimierz Tetmajer and Wincenty Wodzinowski .

The picture has long been a tourist highlight of the city of Lviv. After the Second World War , it was dismantled and secretly transported to Wroclaw in 1946, where it remained in hiding for many years. Since it shows the defeat of the Russian army, the authorities feared a deterioration in Soviet-Polish relations. It was only taken out after the political situation had eased. It is exhibited in a new building, which has been built since 1968 according to the plans of the architect Marek Dziekoński and was only completed in the 1980s. The construction work was delayed for financial and political reasons, the official opening took place on June 14, 1985, since then the panorama has been one of the most visited exhibitions in Poland. The first million was reached in August 1987 and by September 2004 the number of visitors rose to six million, including personalities such as the Polish Pope John Paul II , Queen Beatrix and the Nobel Prize winner Czesław Miłosz .
