Jesse Bartlett "Oley" Oldendorf (born February 16, 1887 in Riverside , California , † April 27, 1974 in Portsmouth , Virginia ) was an admiral in the US Navy . He became famous for his participation in the sea ​​and air battle in the Gulf of Leyte .

Life

Oldendorf graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1909 and then served on various US Navy ships.

In 1922 he received his first command on the destroyer Decatur , which he kept until 1927.

After the USA entered World War II , he was promoted to Rear Admiral (uh) and was entrusted with various missions in the Atlantic. This included, for example, the anti-submarine defense in the sea area around Trinidad and the command of the West Atlantic escorts.

Oldendorf moved to the Pacific in January 1944 and commanded the 4th Cruiser Division from Louisville . With his association he supported, among other things, the landing operation on the Marshall Islands .

On October 24, 1944, he placed his fleet of battleships and cruisers in the classic formation Crossing the T in the Strait of Surigao southwest of Leyte, thus defeating the Japanese in the battle of the Surigao Strait. He was then promoted to Vice Admiral in December 1944 .

During the landing maneuver in the Gulf of Lingayen , he commanded several battleships and was wounded in the Battle of Okinawa on the Pennsylvania .

He resigned from active service in 1948 with the rank of admiral, and the destroyer Oldendorf was named after him. Oldendorf died on April 27, 1974 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
