Stuart Weller

Stuart Weller (* 1870 in Maine (New York) ; † 1927 ) was an American paleontologist and geologist.

Weller studied geology and paleontology at Cornell University with a bachelor's degree in 1894 and received his doctorate in 1901 from Yale University . From 1895 he was at the newly founded University of Chicago , where he was an associate in 1897, an instructor in 1900, an assistant professor in 1902, an associate professor in 1908 and a professor of palaeontology and geology in 1915.

He dealt primarily with the fauna of the Paleozoic Era in the Mississippi Valley, especially in the Mississippian Formation. From 1889 to 1907 he was a paleontologist at the Geological Survey of New Jersey and from 1891 to 1927 he was a geologist at the US Geological Survey, where he worked in the field in the summer months. 1906 ibs 1927 he was a consulting paleontologist with the Illinois Geological Survey. After 1920 he expanded his study area to Missouri as a contributor to the Missouri and Kentucky Geological Survey. He was also curator of invertebrate paleontology and from 1919 director of the Walker Museum at the University of Chicago.

In 1926 he was President of the Paleontological Society .

Arthur Ware Slocom was one of his students .
