Students make schools is an educational initiative with the aim of placing student teachers in schools during their studies so that they can gain extensive practical experience as early as possible. For this purpose, method-oriented student workshops were designed, which the students conduct directly at the school. The program has been running since 2007 and works with around 150 schools in five federal states.

concept

Teacher training students from all disciplines have developed method-oriented workshops for various types of school, which in the middle and upper grades focus primarily on science preparation, presentation techniques, media training and project management . In years 1 to 6, the focus is on learning techniques , the preparation of presentations and media-supported language training. The workshops are summarized in thematic units, the so-called modules, and always take a double hour (90 minutes).

The content of the workshops is constantly checked and revised by the quality team - also made up of student teachers - based on feedback from students and teachers. In addition, the competence partners in the individual federal states, mostly the teacher training universities and parents' associations, are involved in the quality process. The regional school administrations also support the program. This is how the former Berlin Senator for Education, Prof. Dr. Jürgen Zöllner, his successor Sandra Scheeres and the Hamburg School Senator Christa Goetsch each use the program as a meaningful enrichment of the school offer.

The workshops take place in project lessons, on project days, on hiking days or as a working group in the afternoon. "The students are a great enrichment for the schools", states the Berlin school principal Manfred Streich.

This concept gives student teachers an additional practical option in addition to their studies, which is perceived as being very theory-heavy. The program also aims to confront student teachers with their own career choices as early as possible. "For students, the workshops [...] are a great opportunity to gain practical experience that is neglected in the course of studies," is the tenor of the students.

history

Students make school was founded in summer 2007 by Robert Greve, Jasmin Bildik and Lisa Eineter. The three student teachers saw the new Berlin exam component for the Abitur as an opportunity to train students in the techniques of scientific work directly at school.

After a steady expansion of the offer and rapid personnel growth in Berlin, the program started in 2010 in Hamburg and Brandenburg.

Previous balance

Five years after the founding of Studenten macht Schule, the initiative has around 150 partner schools of all school types and employs over 80 student teachers and eleven permanent employees in Germany. More than 25,000 students have so far been trained through the initiative.

Around 95% of the participating schools from one school year took part in the program again in the following year. In preparation for a scientific support for the program, the Students Make Schools initiative has now begun to collect and evaluate detailed feedback from all those involved. The first results should be available by summer 2013.

financing

The Students go to school program does not require government grants or private sponsorship. Rather, the model relies on a social entrepreneurial approach, according to which the schools themselves decide whether they want to use and finance the offer. The schools finance the program according to fixed fee rates through internal school budgets, development associations or parents' participation.

Educational institutions

After the program was initially founded by the non-profit association Studentenmachen Schule eV, the sponsor has now changed into the social enterprise SWiM Bildung UG (limited liability). The executing agency sees itself “as an organization that primarily wants to support social processes and improvements. The offers are not geared towards profit, but towards social added value ”.

criticism

Although the initiative is not exposed to any public criticism, it always has to answer the question whether the commitment of the students would not shift the tasks of the teaching staff to external staff. The journalist Susanne Klaiber suspects: "Actually, this is [...] the task of the teacher". The program itself does not see any shift in the teaching staff's field of activity, but sees itself as an additional support unit. Schools are encouraged from all sides to bring in external expertise and would often see the particular charm in the fact that, through cooperation with students making schools, they also contribute to the teacher training of the students.
