The Studentenwerk Schleswig-Holstein is a non-profit , legal institution under public law . The Studentenwerk provides a variety of services for the 55,000 students in the state of Schleswig-Holstein and thus contributes significantly to the organization of everyday study life in addition to teaching at the universities - in the canteens and cafeterias, dormitories, through study financing, with the social counseling and support services as well as by supporting cultural and creative activities.

The student union's self-governing bodies (board of directors and administrative board) are made up of equal parts by students and university professors. As stipulated in the Student Union Act, it promotes the economic, social and cultural interests of the students and thus creates a social environment in general teaching at universities.

history

At the end of the First World War, the economic situation of the students and teachers was so bad that they formed independent self-help groups and emergency communities. From this, the official “student aid” developed in 1921/22.

From 1933 the student union in Kiel was also subject to the influence of the National Socialists. In 1938 a Reichsstudentenwerk was established, in which all regional student unions were brought into line. The institutions temporarily lost their independence and economic and political independence.

In 1961 the student union in Kiel became a model for the entire republic. The so-called "Kieler Studentenhausplan" aimed to build student houses at universities, which should serve as the center of student community life. Not only should all funding institutions be united under one roof, but also specialist rooms for cultural activities should be provided. This is how the Kiel student house and the hexagonal building (called ICK point), the heart of the “Communication & Culture” department, were built in the mid-1960s. However, the Kiel model was then only implemented in a comprehensive form in a few cities.

To look after the almost 55,000 students at the various university locations in Schleswig-Holstein, the Studentenwerk Schleswig-Holstein employs around 540 people who work in the individual departments, administration and company services.
