The Studierendenwerk Essen-Duisburg supports students during their studies with numerous services in the areas of housing, nutrition and finance. It advises on social issues, is on hand with help and advice in challenging situations and also designs cultural offers.

It is responsible for the social and economic support of around 52,000 students at the University of Duisburg-Essen with the two campuses in Duisburg and Essen , the Folkwang University of the Arts and the Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences in Mülheim an der Ruhr and Bottrop .

The Essen-Duisburg Student Union is one of twelve student unions in North Rhine-Westphalia . There are a total of 57 student unions across Germany. The umbrella organization is the German Student Union based in Berlin.

history

Shortly before the universities in Essen and Duisburg merged to form the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) in 2003, the Essen and Duisburg student unions merged on January 1, 2002. Both former student unions were founded in 1974. In Duisburg, the former college of education had had a cafeteria since 1968 . The first cafeteria in Essen was opened in 1976, the Duisburg campus cafeteria followed in 1991. The main construction period of the Duisburg student dormitories can be dated from 1981 to 1985. Social and psychological counseling for students has existed since April 1, 1994.

In 2018, the Studierendenwerk had 375 employees, the majority of whom work in the catering industry.

In September 2014, the University Future Act (HZG) NRW was passed. In Article 4 of this law, the new Student Union Act (StWG) was passed and came into force on October 1, 2014. Accordingly, the student unions in North Rhine-Westphalia were asked to rename themselves student unions. The administrative board of the Studierendenwerk Essen-Duisburg passed a new statute in its meeting on December 15, 2014, which provides for a change of name to the Studierendenwerk Essen-Duisburg . The Ministry of Innovation, Science and Research of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia approved the statutes in a letter dated February 5, 2015. The new name of the former Essen-Duisburg Student Union is thus the Essen-Duisburg Student Union - an institution under public law - .

The Studierendenwerk Essen-Duisburg is an institution under public law and sees itself as a service provider for students. It consists of the areas of gastronomy, housing, student finance, childcare, social and psychological advice and culture.

GASTRONOMY

The STUDIERENDENWERK operates nine canteens, eight cafeterias and a restaurant. In the canteens, the focus is on lunch. In addition to what is offered at the universities, the catering supplies the STUDIERENDENWERK's day-care centers and hosts events, celebrations and conferences in the vicinity of the universities via the conference service.

LIVING

The STUDIERENDENWERK offers a total of more than 2,500 dormitory rooms in Essen, Duisburg and Mülheim an der Ruhr. Rooms are rented in a shared flat, single apartments or single rooms on a shared floor. The 19 dormitories are all close to the University of Duisburg-Essen and the Ruhr-West University of Applied Sciences. Every student of the University of Duisburg-Essen, the Folkwang University of the Arts or the Hochschule Ruhr West is entitled to rent. CONSULTATION

The STUDIERENDENWERK's advice centers are contact points that provide important information about studying and provide advice, support, support and support in difficult life situations. CHILDCARE

The STUDIERENDENWERK offers a total of 132 childcare places. In the day care centers Brückenspatzen and Tiegelkids on the Essen campus as well as in the day care center Campino in Duisburg, children from the age of four months until they start school are looked after by specialist pedagogical staff. In the two day care facilities, the researcher kids on the Mülheim campus and the campus kids on the Duisburg campus, children aged four months to three years can be looked after by qualified day care staff like in a family.

CULTURE

The STUDIERENDENWERK supports international students with questions about studying in Germany, with communication with authorities (e.g. when filling out forms) and gives advice on personal questions. In addition, the Studierendenwerk promotes intercultural networking with its language café Café-Lingua, intercultural training, student project groups and events in the dormitories.

Organization / financing

The legal basis for the work of the Studierendenwerk Essen-Duisburg is based on the "Law on Student Services in the State of North Rhine-Westphalia" of February 27, 1974. According to §3 of the Studierendenwerkgesetz NRW (StWG), which applies from 1 October 2014 Version two bodies: the board of directors and the management. The board of directors decides according to §6 StWG u. a. on the articles of association, contribution regulations and the choice of auditor. It decides on the business plan, determines the annual financial statements and relieves the management. The management as the second body leads the student union and conducts its business on its own responsibility. She represents the Studierendenwerk in court and in legal transactions, is responsible for the business plan and is the superior of the staff (Section 9 StWG).

The Studierendenwerk Essen-Duisburg finances itself mainly from its own income from gastronomy and rental income, social contributions levied by the students, a general state subsidy from tax income from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and state and community subsidies for operating the day-care centers.
