Studio 4 ° C

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

KK Studio 4 ° C ( Japanese 株式会社 ス タ ジ オ よ ん ど し い , Kabushiki-gaisha Sutajio Yon-doshii , English Studio 4 ° C Co., Ltd. ) is a Japanese anime studio based in Musashino .

It was founded in 1986 by Eiko Tanaka (President and Chief Producer), Kōji Morimoto (Director) and Yoshiharu Sato (Chief Animator). It owes its name to the anomaly of the water : The fact that water has its highest density at around 4 ° C is an allusion to the fact that the studio wants to concentrate as many ideas as possible in its works.

Although founded in 1986, the first work, Memories, was not published until 1995. The reason for this was that important members of the studio were initially involved in projects from other studios; For example, Eiko Tanaka was the producer of My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki's delivery service at Studio Ghibli .

With 60 permanent employees (as of May 2005) Studio 4 ° C is one of the small studios, which is certainly also due to the philosophy, which is unusual for the industry, of allowing directors and animators a lot of artistic freedom so that they can create personal works. This company philosophy makes it difficult to find financial backers in the highly competitive anime market, as the work is often not suitable for the masses. On the other hand, they were able to arouse the interest of the Wachowski brothers with their work, for example , who entrusted the studio with the production of five of the nine Animatrix short films. Further examples of the collaboration with well-known artists are the video clip for the song Extra by Ken Ishii and the film Steamboy by Katsuhiro Ōtomo , for which the majority of the animations were created at Studio 4 ° C.
