Stung Atay is a dam on the Atay River in the Cardamom Mountains , Veal Veang District , Pursat Province in Cambodia , which has been under construction since 2008 . On the afternoon of Saturday December 1, 2012 , after heavy rains, the tunnel of an outlet structure of the dam broke and caused a tidal wave that presumably drowned four workers (they were initially missing) and injured seven, four of them seriously. The entire reservoir was emptied.

At the dam, a gravity dam, a power plant with four turbines is being built, which should provide 4 × 25 MW = 100 MW. It is intended to provide electricity to Cambodia. The construction work should be finished in 2012, it was stopped after the accident. The dam is being built by the Chinese Datang Corporation. The construction cost is about $ 255 million. The Atay is a tributary of the Stung Ruxeg Chrum.
