The hook ladder is a discipline of fire fighting sport . A hook ladder is used to climb a three-story building on a temporary basis. Since 2016, this discipline has also been carried out by women.

history

In the past, the hook ladder was developed to rescue people. With increasing mechanization it faded into the background as a rescue device, but is still used internationally. The first competitions were held in the Soviet Union in 1937 . While the record when climbing the hook ladder in 1937 was 29.8 seconds, it was improved to 18.4 seconds in 1951. Albert Loginov (Russia) holds the current world record from 2012 with 12.56 seconds.

The technical means have also been improved over time. While the heavy wooden operational ladders were used for sport in the beginning, there are currently professionally made ladders made of aluminum that no longer meet the DIN dimensions, but have to comply with the competition rules.

Hook ladder

The hook ladder used does not correspond to the DIN dimensions of a fire service ladder . According to the competition rules, it consists of light metal or wood with wooden or metal rungs. The metal hook is to be provided with teeth and has a minimum length of 40 cm. The length of the ladder is 410 cm ± 10 cm, which makes it approx. 30 cm shorter than the DIN ladder. In addition, a minimum width of 28 cm, 13 rungs and a minimum weight of 8.5 kg are required.

Competition track and climbing tower

The discipline is held on at least two lanes. Each lane is at least 2.0 m wide and the approach distance from the start to the tower is 32.25 m. The Steigerturm is clad with a wooden facade. This is at least 13.12 m high and has 3 floors. The windows on the 3 floors are the same size and are 1.87 m high and 1.10 m wide. The first window sill is 4.25 m above the floor. The further gaps between the window sills are 3.30 m each, which means that the window sill is 10.85 m on the 3rd floor.

A safety net should be attached to the riser tower to prevent falls. As an additional means of securing, all lifts are equipped with fall arrest systems (fall arrest device or other suitable means of securing). There is also a 4 m wide gravel pit in front of the tower.

Carrying out the ascent

The athlete goes to the starting block with his ladder. Usually several athletes start next to each other on several competition tracks in order to enable comparison and incentive. At the start, the ladder may protrude beyond the start line. After the start command, the athlete runs the 32.25 m hook ladder to the climbing tower, takes it over his head with both hands and hangs it with the hook on the window sill on the first floor. Now the ascent begins. Once on the first floor, the athlete sits down on the window sill next to the ladder. With a few quick hand movements, the ladder is now hung on the second floor. The athlete continues the ascent and repeats the procedure on the next floor. On the third floor, the athlete jumps into the window. The time is taken when both feet touch the ground.

For women, the hook ladder hangs on the first floor of the tower before the start. You start from the start line and climb to the first floor. The time is also taken here when both feet touch the ground.

International fire fighting sports competitions

The World Fire Brigade Association CTIF has been holding the International Fire Brigade Competitions in various cities in Europe every four years since 1961 as World Championships , also known as the Fire Brigade Olympiads.

In addition to the 100-meter obstacle course , the 4 × 100-meter fire brigade , and the wet fire fighting attack, climbing the hook ladder is one of four disciplines in these world championships. The evaluation takes place both as an individual competitor and as a team.

The three first-placed competitors and the three first-placed teams will be awarded the international fire fighting sport medal in gold, silver and bronze.

Situation in Germany

Characterized by the historical development of fire fighting sport, this discipline can only be found in the area of the former GDR . In competitions at national level, the performance of the athletes is compared several times a year. The German championship in fire fighting sports takes place every four years, in which the current German champions in hook ladder climbing are determined.

René Frost holds the German record with 14.21 seconds.
