Su Jia-chyuan ( Chinese  蘇嘉全 , Pinyin Sū Jiāquán ; born October 22, 1956 in Changzhi , Pingtung County ) is a Taiwanese politician of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and since February 1, 2016 President of the Legislative Yuan , the parliament of the republic China (Taiwan) .

Political career

Su is a graduate of Taiwan National University of Oceanography in Keelung (graduated 1979). After graduating, he became involved in the Dangwai movement, which aimed to democratize Taiwan. In 1986 he was elected as a member of the Pingtung state parliament and was one of the founding members of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). For his party, he was a member of the National Assembly from 1991 to 1992 and, for the first time, to the Taiwanese parliament (Legislative Yuan) from 1992 to 1997. In 1997, Su was elected District Administrator for Pingtung County and held that office until 2004.

In April 2004 he was appointed to the cabinet of the Republic under President Chen Shui-bian , to which he served as Minister of the Interior until 2006 and as Chairman of the Agriculture Commission from 2006 to 2008. After leaving the government, Su held various party offices, including a. the office of Secretary General of the DPP. In 2010 he ran for the office of mayor of Taichung , but with 48.88% of the vote, he was narrowly defeated by his opponent Jason Hu of the Kuomintang (51.12%). In the 2012 presidential election , he ran alongside the DPP presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen for the office of vice-president.

After the parliamentary elections in January 2016 , Su moved again as a member of parliament and was elected President of Parliament in the first session of the new legislative period on February 1, 2016. He is the first speaker in history who is not a member of the Kuomintang .
