The Su Suercone sinkhole

The sinkhole Su Suercone , (also called Suercòne, Su Sellone or Su Sercone), is a karst funnel on the limestone plateau of the Supramonte , about 900 meters above sea level, near Orgosolo in the province of Nuoro in Sardinia . Su Suercone is a few miles as the crow flies from the archaeological site of Tiscali and the Gola Gorropu gorge . The remains of the nuraghic village "Su Nuragheddu" lie between the sinkhole and the Donanigoro plateau.

The deepest sinkhole in Sardinia, at around 200 m, is located near the “Campu Donianicoro” excavation site. Its opening is 500 meters wide and the area is 18.09 hectares. It seems impossible to climb the funnel with its vertical wall, but there is an access between the rocks on the wall to the south. Several troughs made from tree trunks show that shepherds grazed their flocks in the sinkhole. In the northern part you come across a 30-meter-deep vertical break point, which is probably connected to the karst caves below.

Inside the karst funnel, especially on its walls, you will find some centuries-old 18 to 20 meter high yew trees, while the wet terraces are covered by moss and ferns. The presence of people in prehistoric times is documented by numerous grave goods found in various caves. In 1994 Su Suercone was registered as a natural monument (Monumento naturale) .
