Suba District

Suba District was a district in Nyanza Province in Kenya . The district capital was Mbita Point . The Suba District was divided into five divisions: Mbita, Lambwe, Central, Gwassi and Mfangano. The district bordered Lake Victoria to the west . In addition to the 1055 km² land area, 1190 km² water area of ​​Lake Victoria belonged to the district. 16 islands in Lake Victoria also belonged to the Suba District, the largest being Rusina Island and Mfangano Island . Ruma National Park was in the Lambwe Valley in the Central Division .

As part of the 2010 constitution , the Kenyan districts were dissolved. The area is now part of Homa Bay County .

economy

More than 50% of the population lived from agriculture, 40% from fishing and breeding. Among other things, cotton and sunflowers were grown .

Healthcare

The Suba District had 21 health care facilities in 2005, including two hospitals. There were more than 85,000 potential patients for one doctor. Mainly malaria , respiratory infections and diarrhea were treated. 80% of the hospital beds were occupied on average with HIV-positive patients. The HIV - prevalence in Suba District was 34% in the year of 2002. Infant mortality was 11% in 2002, and 13% of children died before their 5th birthday. The Suba District Hospital had 50 beds.

In 2005 the Suba District had 172 primary schools and 12 secondary schools .
