Soriba Kouyate
Soriba Kouyaté (born December 23, 1963 in Dakar , † October 13, 2010 in Paris ) was a Senegalese griot and kora player .
Live and act
Kouyaté, son of the griot and kora player Mamadou Kouyaté , first attended the kora school founded by his father. In addition to the traditional repertoire, he also played funk and jazz tracks . As a result, he changed the instrument: In addition to electrical amplification, he used additional pegs to quickly retune the pentatonic strings and transferred plucking and slapping techniques from guitar and bass guitar to the instrument. He has performed with African musicians such as Youssou N'Dour , Salif Keïta , Ray Lema and Hugh Masekela , but also with Dizzy Gillespie , Peter Gabriel , Harry Belafonte and Diana Ross . He moved to Paris, where he formed a band with which he developed his own world jazz . Since 1995 he has been recording albums under his own name. In 2003 he played at the Frankfurt Jazz Festival with Candy Dulfer and Michel Godard . Before his death he was able to complete the recordings for his last album with the Kora Jazz Trio with Moussa Cissoko, Djéli Moussa Diawara and Abdoulaye Diabaté. His music was also used in Spike Lee's films.
Prizes and awards
In 1989 he received the first prize at the Ouest Africain de la Kora en Guinée festival .
