Subanen (also known as Subanon or Subanun) is an indigenous tribe on the Zamboanga Peninsula of Mindanao, Philippines. Especially in the mountainous areas of Zamboanga del Sur and Misamis Occidental . The subanes have their own language. The name Subanen means "people of the river". These people originally lived in the fertile coastal areas of northwest Mindanao . Due to the intrusion of Muslims and Cebuanos in the coastal areas, the Subanen settled further in the mountainous interior. The Sebuanos generally refer to themselves as the "Gbansa Subanon", which means "the Subanon Nation". They differ in their place of origin based on the names of rivers, lakes, mountains or places. The Subanos are mostly farmers. They grow grain and rice and raise livestock. Above all, they keep pigs, chickens, cattle and water buffalo. They build their houses along slopes and ridges of the mountains with a view of their fields.
