Suchart Chaovisith ( Thai : สุ ชาติ เชาว์ วิ ศิ ษ ฐ ; * 1940 in Chiang Mai , † October 22, 2009 in Bangkok ) was a Thai politician .

biography

Suchart began his professional career in 1966, initially as an administrative officer in the finance department of the Thai Army, before he became an employee in the Ministry of Finance in 1972. In the following decades he held numerous key positions within the Ministry and in 1993 became Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry. Most recently, between 1997 and 2001, he was Director General of the Tax Department within the Public Service.

He then began his political career when he was elected as a member of the House of Representatives (Saphaputhan Ratsadon) by Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra as a representative of the now banned Thai Rak Thai party . After the February 2001 election, Thaksin initially appointed him Deputy Minister of Finance.

In 2003 he became finance minister himself and, as part of a further cabinet reshuffle, in 2004 he was deputy prime minister of Thailand for some time.
