Brittney Denise Parks , better known by her stage name Sudan Archives , is an American violinist, singer, songwriter and producer .

biography

Parks grew up in Cincinnati , Ohio . In the fifth grade ( 4th grade ), that is, from the age of 9 to 10, she began to play the violin; she taught herself the instrument. She also played the violin in the church choir.

Her stepfather, a music producer, wanted to set up Parks as a pop duo with her twin sister. When that failed, Parks went for a solo career. At 19 she moved to Los Angeles , where she was able to get hold of a contract with the Stones Throw Records label .

After two EPs (2017 and 2018), her debut album Athena was released on November 1, 2019 , which received consistently positive reviews.

Musical style

According to Yuki Schubert ( taz ), Sudan Archives created “a hyper-modern version of R&B, in which the classical instrument becomes a hypnotizing rhythm generator.” This is accompanied by self-programmed beats and their own singing, “sometimes gently vulnerable, sometimes challenging and daring”. The basis of this sound comes from Africa, particularly Sudan and Ghana , although Parks never lived there.
