life and career

Sue Carol was born into a wealthy Chicago family under the name Evelyn Jean Lederer . She was discovered by film director Ted Reed in 1926 while attending a film set with her high school. Her film debut took place in 1927 in the silent film Slaves of Beauty by John G. Blystone , where she immediately received a substantial supporting role. Carol quickly became a sought-after actress, and in 1928 she was voted one of the WAMPAS Baby Stars . In most of her roles, she played lively flapper girls. Other films such as The Exalted Flapper , The Air Circus and Soft Cushions made her a star. At the height of her popularity, the famous hit Sweet Sue, Just You was dedicated to her. In several film productions she played alongside her second husband Nick Stuart , with whom she was married from 1929 until the divorce in 1941. Their daughter Carol Lee was born in 1932.

Sue Carol's star sank again in the early 1930s, as the flapper girls she embodied went out of fashion with the onset of the Great Depression . Once on a Warner Brothers film set, when she was accused of being too slow, she decided to turn away from acting. She later became a successful talent agent in Hollywood and owned several stores. In 1942 she married the actor Alan Ladd , whom she helped her breakthrough through her skillful placement of film roles. The marriage lasted until Ladd's death in 1964. Their children are Alana Ladd Jackson (* 1943) and the actor and film producer David Ladd (* 1947). Her granddaughter is the actress Jordan Ladd (* 1975).

Sue Carol died of complications from a heart attack in 1982 at the age of 75. She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her film work .
