Suffer in Paradise is a funeral doom band formed in 2009 .

history

In 2009 singer and guitarist Alexey Gagarin, keyboardist Sergey Flyurin and bassist R. Pickman founded the funeral doom band Suffer in Paradise in Voronezh . After recording a self-titled demo , the project split and was not reactivated until 2014.

In the same year, the group recorded the positively received debut This Dead Is World for Endless Winter . Alex Drozd admitted in a review written for Doom-Metal.com that This Dead Is World was "not an album to be listened to in an active way" because the group is too repetitive for him, but the melodies are "great", "remarkable" and "beautiful". In a review for the Italian webzine Aristocrazia, Crypt of Fear wrote that the album did not offer a “superlative”, but in the genre it sounds “pleasant” and has a “heavy atmosphere”. Stefano Cavanna wrote for metaleyes.iyezine that the album was a "universal remedy" in the waiting period "until the return of the top names" in the genre.

After the release, guitarist Zakhar TS joined the band. The second album Ephemere , released in 2016, was recorded as a quartet . Also Ephemeral learned laudatory resonance. Eli Elliott criticized Doom-Metal.com for the fact that Suffer in Paradise skillfully served the ingredients of the genre, but played them too safely. The biggest point of criticism he cited was a lack of dynamism due to the lack of a drummer. Crypt of Fear wrote again for Aristocrazia, this time citing that the group with ephemers had established itself as a stable group that did not disappoint. Cavanna discussed the album again for metaleyes.iyeznie, which was one of the best albums of the year and turned out to be the flagship of the genre and suffered in Paradise bands like Comatose Vigil and Abstract Spirit inherited in this role.

style

The webzine Doom-Metal.com describes the music played by Suffer in Paradise as a "melodic variant of Funeral Doom ." Reviewers also refer to genre interpreters such as Comatose Vigil , Skepticism , Profetus and Abstract Spirit .

The music is characterized by “keyboard and programmed drumming”, with the keyboard being described as “almost constantly present”. The songwriting is appropriate to the genre. The pace remains slow and rarely picks up dynamics . The guitar play is riff-driven and the singing is kept as a guttural growling .
