The Sultan Idris Education University (times. Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris , Eng. Sultan Idris University of Education ) (UPSI) Tanjung Malim in, in the state of Perak is a state Pedagogical University in Malaysia . It was founded in 1922 and is named after Sultan Idris , the 28th Sultan of Perak from 1889 to 1916.

history

There were preliminary considerations for an independent teacher training college in Malaysia at the beginning of the 20th century. At the instigation of the British orientalist Richard Olaf Winstedts , the decision was made in 1916 to set up a teachers college and in 1919 construction work began in Tanjong Malim. The location was also chosen because of the fertile soil in this city, as at that time a not inconsiderable part of the curriculum consisted of agricultural subjects. In 1922 the Sultan Idris Training College (SITC) was opened with 120 students and twelve lecturers. The first degrees were awarded in 1924. Over the next few years the college grew steadily and in 1957 the name was changed from Malay to Maktab Perguruan Sultan Idris (MPSI) . The first female students were accepted in 1976 and in 1987 the name of the college in Institut Perguruan Sultan Idris engl. Sultan Idris Teachers Institute IPSI changed. With the new status as an institute, new courses were introduced and degrees were awarded in cooperation with the Universiti Pertanian Malaysia of what is now Putra University . In 1997 the institute received the status of a university and its current name. Studies as a university started in the same year with 350 students.
