Sultan ibn Saif II

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sultan ibn Saif II ( Arabic سلطان بن سيف المقبالي, DMG Sulṭān b. Saif al-Muqbālī ; † 1718 ) was Imam of Oman from 1711 to 1718.

Sultan ibn Saif II succeeded his father Saif ibn Sultan I (1692-1711). He initially stopped the Omani attacks on British and Dutch merchant shipping, which had started under his father. This was to avoid counter-attacks by Britain and Holland on the Omani trade. In the period that followed, Oman only attacked Portuguese and Persian shipping.

Tensions between the Azd and Nizariy tribes began under Saif II and subsequently split into the Hinawiy and Ghafiry factions. These new groups were to play a major role in the dynastic power struggles in the period that followed. Sultan ibn Saif II died in 1718 in his newly built residence al-Hazm. Under his underage successor Saif ibn Sultan II (1718–1743), another civil war broke out and led to the fall of the Yaruba dynasty .
