The Sulzberger See - also called Öschlesee - is a 33-hectare lake in the municipality of Sulzberg in the Oberallgäu district in Swabia . It is part of the "Sulzberger See" landscape protection area, which includes the surrounding high moor landscape , which was created in the lake area that is now silted up. As a remnant of the large Rauns ice reservoir, the Sulzberger See is a dead lake of particular geoscientific value and has been designated as a geotope by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment .
Due to the unstable subsoil in the raised bog area, the lake - with the exception of the small town "See" on its northwestern bank - is surrounded by an undeveloped, natural landscape. The hamlet and its "Öschlesee" came into the possession of the Kempten Abbey through purchase in 1525, together with the castle and village of Sulzberg. In 1803, expropriated on the occasion of the secularization of the monastery, the lake was briefly in the hands of the Bavarian state. At a later auction he achieved the amount of 52 guilders .
The Sulzberger See, only about five kilometers south of the city of Kempten, is used as a leisure area all year round. On its north bank is a lido with toilets, a playground, a kiosk and the possibility of renting boats. Sunbathing lawns stretch along the south bank. Anglers appreciate the variety of fish species that are native to this lake, and there has been a lake circular trail for hikers since 2010.
