Antechinus minimus is a species of bag mammal from the genus of the broad-foot bag mice ( Antechinus ).

distribution and habitat

This pouch-mouse lives on the south-east coast of Australia , in the southern Central Highlands and the alpine areas of Victoria and the extreme south of South Australia near Mount Gambier . Furthermore, the species occurs in Tasmania and on the Bass Strait Islands King Island and Flinders Island .

The species’s habitat is open forests, non-grazed, moist and dense heathland and swampy grassland with bracken and sour grass .

Way of life

Antechinus minimus is active at night and partly at dusk, but also during the day. The gestation period in Tasmania is between May and July. After a gestation period of 28 to 32 days, 6 to 8 young are born between July and August. On the mainland, reproduction occurs about a month earlier, the reason for this is unknown. The females survive another year, but the males, like all other species of broad-footed pouch mice, die after the mating season ends. The main diet of this species consists of insects .

threat

Antechinus minimus is listed as safe (least concern) by the IUCN .

Systematics

This species was described in 1803 as the first representative of the genus Antechinus by Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire . He assigned them to the genus of the bag marten , which is why they received the specific epithet minimus ( Latin for the smallest).

Two subspecies are recognized:

  • At the. minimus inhabits Tasmania and the islands of the Bass Strait .
  • At the. maritimus lives on the Australian mainland.
