Map of the historic Sunda Kingdom

The Kingdom of Sunda ( Indonesian Kerajaan Sunda ) was a historical state in the western part of the island of Java in what is now Indonesia .

The Hindu Empire emerged from the collapse of the Kingdom of Tarumanagar in 670. The kingdom existed, after a temporary amalgamation to the United Kingdom of Surda and Galuh , until its collapse in 1579 and extended over the entire west of the island, from the Sunda - Strait in the far west to the Cipamali and Ciseray rivers in the east of West Java. Today this area corresponds roughly to the Indonesian provinces of Banten , Jawa Barat and the western part of Jawa Tengah .

The only surviving Hindu temple in West Java is the Candi Cangkuang from the 9th century. It stands 14 kilometers north of Garut on a small island in a lake.
