Ulrich Schultheiss

Ulrich Schultheiss (born March 18, 1956 in Nuremberg ) is a German composer and university professor .

General

Ulrich Schultheiss has been working as a composer, arranger and producer in the field of contemporary music and functional music since the mid- 1980s . His musical language is often permeated with elements from other genres and cultures. His compositions are performed in most European countries, in states of the former Soviet Union, in the USA and Canada, in Central and South America and in the Far East. There are also radio recordings and CD productions at home and abroad. Schultheiss was active for many years as an interpreter of his own works, especially with various cabaret programs. In addition to his artistic activity, he works as a professor of music theory at the Musikhochschule of the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster .

Life

Ulrich Schultheiss received instrumental lessons ( piano , later also cello and violin ) from the age of four . At the age of 11 he joined the pianist Erich Appel at the Nuremberg Conservatory as a young student . Before he graduated from high school, he won several prizes at the Jugend musiziert competition in various fields, including federal prize winners in the piano four-handed / 2 pianos category.

After a short study visit to the Medical Faculty of the Università di Ferrara / Italy , he studied at the University of Music in Würzburg . His teachers included u. a. the pianist Julian von Károlyi , the music theorist Zsolt Gárdonyi and the composer Bertold Hummel , with whom Schultheiss took the master class diploma.

Ulrich Schultheiss was a lecturer at various German training institutions, including at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich , at the University of the Arts in Berlin and at the University of Music in Würzburg , where he ran the New Music Studio with Christoph Wünsch from 2000 to 2002 directed. In 2002 he was appointed professor for music theory at the Detmold University of Music in Münster.

Awards

Ulrich Schultheiss has won numerous national and international composition competitions, including several GEMA prizes.

  • 1984: 2nd prize at the European composition competition for orchestral music in Basel
  • 1984: Scholarship from the Free State of Bavaria and stay at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris
  • 1985: 1st prize in the composition competition for choral music of the GEMA Foundation in Berlin
  • 1985: 1st prize in the composition competition for orchestral works of the GEMA Foundation on the occasion of the European Year of Music
  • 1985: Culture Prize of the City of Würzburg
  • 1986: State sponsorship award for young artists from the Free State of Bavaria
  • 1987: Scholarship from the Richard Wagner Scholarship Foundation
  • 1994: Scholarship from the State of Rhineland-Palatinate and stay at the Künstlerhaus Edenkoben
  • 2000: 2nd prize at the "International Composing and Arranging Award of Sibelius Music"
  • 2006: Finalist at the International Saxchoir Composition Competition in Birmingham (National Saxchoir of Great Britain)
  • 2006: Finalist at the Coups de Vents - Concours international de composition pour orchester d'harmonie (France)

Compositions

Ulrich Schultheiss' catalog raisonné contains over 150 compositions for solo instruments, chamber music , orchestral works , singing and electronic music . There are also a number of arrangements by other composers, such as George Gershwin . Together with the actors Reinhard Mahlberg and Bernhard Weck, cabaret programs were created, including “ Merkt Ihr nischt ” with texts by Kurt Tucholsky and “ How to revolutionize while cleaning lamps ” (music: Ulrich Schultheiss).
