The Sunraysia Highway is a trunk road in the west of the Australian state of Victoria . It connects the Western Freeway northwest of Ballarat with the Calder Highway south of Ouyen .

The Sunraysia Highway branches off about 10 km northwest of Ballarat from the Western Freeway (NM8) to the northwest. At Avoca it crosses the Pyrenees Highway (B180) and meets the Wimmera Highway (B240) in St. Arnaud . His path continues to the northwest, where he meets the Borung Highway (C234 / C239) in Donald and runs with him to Litchfield .

There it branches off to the north and after 54 km it reaches Birchip , where it bends west, 11 km further it bends sharply north and north-northwest. The Henty Highway (B200) branches off to the west south of Lascelles . 11 km south of Ouyen , the Sunraysia Highway reaches the Calder Highway (A79) and ends.

The Sunraysia Highway runs essentially parallel to the Calder Highway, but about 60 km further west.

It connects the agricultural centers of western Victoria, where grain and wine are grown and cattle are raised. There are also many food processing companies in this area and tourism also plays a certain role.

The highway connects these centers with the markets and ports of southern Victoria and South Australia .

history

Formerly called the North Western Highway . It was not given its current name until the 1960s.

State of development

The road has two lanes with a dirt shoulder along its entire length. There are no fast lanes.
