Sunrise Movement is a grassroots movement that emerged in the United States in 2017 and advocates a Green New Deal as a solution to the climate crisis .

aims

Sunrise aims to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from electricity, traffic, manufacturing, agriculture and other areas within 10 years, completely switch to renewable energies and secure a job guarantee.

history

Sunrise was founded in 2017 mainly by members in their mid-twenties. Shortly after the 2018 elections in the United States , the movement occupied the office of politician Nancy Pelosi , supported by politician Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez . Varshini Prakash and Stephen O'Hanlon are among the most famous members of the movement .

criticism

Sunrise is evidently divided on CO 2 capture and storage ; the demand for it, which was contained in an original version of a thesis paper, was no longer contained in the final version. In science, such procedures are considered to be indispensable in order to be able to comply with the 1.5-degree and two-degree targets agreed in the Paris Agreement , which led to criticism of Sunrise.

network

Sunrise is similar to other movements with similar goals, including L'Affaire du siècle in France , Extinction Rebellion in the UK and Mums for a Safe Climate in Australia , which are jointly calling for the Earth Strike on September 27, 2019 , one of the largest climate protests planned to date Protest action.
