The Suntory Art Museum ( Japanese サ ン ト リ ー 美術館 , Santorī Bijutsukan , English Suntory Museum of Art ) is a private museum for arts and crafts in Tokyo .

history

The second son and successor to the founder of the whiskey and beverage company Suntory , Saji Keizō (1919-1999), opened an art museum in 1961 with the aim of showing art within everyday life. So the handicraft occupies an important place in the collection. The first building was in Akasaka, the current one opened in 2007 on the former site of the Ministry of Defense .

The collection

The collection, for which 1000 m² is available, is divided into six categories:

As a national treasure , a lacquer box from being Heian Period excellent, the descriptive name Fusenryō raden makie tebako ( 浮線綾螺鈿蒔絵手箱bears), about "box with geometric patterns in a circle, mother of pearl and scattered gold deposits."

Known from the list of important cultural assets is the pair of screens “Kings from the Far West on Horseback” ( 泰西 王 候 駒 馬 図 屏風 ) from the Momoyama period when the Jesuits taught Western art.

The museum belongs to the "Roppongi Art Triangle" together with the National Art Center Tokyo and the Mori Art Museum .
