history

In Sunyani, important trade routes traditionally cross, such as the salt trade between the coast and the north of the country. Many elephants still lived in the Brong Ahafo region around 1900 , so that Sunyani became the capital of a forest area full of elephant hunters and ivory traders . The elephant meat of the animals that were hunted on a large scale by local people was exchanged in Sunyani for other foods such as kola nuts or flour. From Sunyani, ivory was often brought to the Europeans as far as the coast. Originally, Sunyani had a name in the Akan language that translated means “elephant slaughter place”.

economy

The elephant populations were quickly reduced and the animal business was no longer worthwhile for the general public. The population of Sunyani then planted large cocoa plantations in the area , which brought the city a not inconsiderable wealth due to the high world market price in the 1950s.

In 2011, in addition to the cultivation of cocoa, the production of cashew nuts was an important economic factor in the Sunyani region. Since 2009, the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), together with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the African Cashew Initiative (ACI), have been trying to make cashew producers competitive both in Ghana and in the neighboring countries of Burkina Faso , Benin , in Ivory Coast to increase their income.
