Blade server from Supermicro

Super Micro Computer , or Supermicro for short , is primarily a manufacturer of computers for data centers . The company was founded in 1993 by the married couple Charles and Chiu-Chu Liu Liang in San José , California .

Company data

Supermicro posted revenues of $ 25.4 million in 2008 revenue of $ 541 million. At the end of the fiscal year, Supermicro had over 800 full-time employees worldwide, including 655 in San José. At that time, around 300 people were employed in research and development and around 330 in production. Supermicro has made profits in all accounting periods since it was founded. In fiscal 2015, Supermicro generated $ 1.99 billion and a profit of $ 111.6 million. Supermicro is represented in 80 countries around the world, employs over 2200 people and supplies more than 800 customers.

Supermicro is listed on NASDAQ GM.

From late summer 2017 onwards, Supermicro came under pressure not only for a short time due to delays in the publication of the annual and quarterly financial statements and inconsistent sales allocations. In addition, the news company Bloomberg reported in October 2018 that Supermicro computers were supplied by suppliers in China with components that enable espionage. This cut the Supermicro share value in half at times. The questioned technician who used to work for an Israeli secret service later emphasized that this was not a specific problem for Supermicro, but an industry-wide problem with supply chains. He was misquoted by Bloomberg. For that report, the news company Bloomberg received two negative prizes in August 2019 for the “Most overhyped Bug” and for the “Most Epic Fail” at the annual black hat conference on IT security in Las Vegas.

Products

Supermicro manufactures motherboards , barebones , conventional servers , blade servers , computer cases and cooling solutions that are used in their own complete systems, but are also sold to OEM manufacturers and computer distribution. The complete solutions offered are based on both Intel and AMD processors. Particular emphasis is placed on the energy efficiency of the power supply units, which consistently work with efficiencies over 85%, sometimes with over 93%.
