Great soccer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Super Soccer is a video game and one of the first soccer games for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), developed by Human Entertainment and released in Japan in 1991. It was launched in the United States and Europe in May 1992 .

Game modes

After the start, the player can choose between the two modes "Exhibition" and "Tournament". While the former is just a single match or penalty shootout, the latter has to defeat 15 national teams one after the other as well as a special Nintendo "All-Star" team, which acts as the final boss . The player has to compete against a stronger team every round. This means that strategies and tactics that initially led to success become obsolete later. Below are the teams listed in the order in which they must be defeated. The order corresponds roughly to the ranking of the teams in the 1990 World Cup. One of the teams is controlled by the player himself and is therefore omitted:

  • Belgium
  • Uruguay
  • Yugoslavia
  • Colombia
  • Japan
  • United States
  • France
  • Ireland
  • Romania
  • Cameroon
  • England
  • Holland
  • Brazil
  • Italy
  • Argentina
  • Germany
  • Nintendo- "All-Star" team (can only be selected by the 2nd player using a key combination)

Gameplay

In contrast to games like FIFA and Pro Evolution Soccer (which did not appear until later), Super Soccer uses the behind-goal perspective. The game is very arcade-heavy, the level of difficulty ranges from very easy (opponents such as Belgium and Uruguay) to difficult (Nintendo "All-Star" team). Success is most likely to be achieved by going it alone, with one or two players in almost every team, as they run faster and shoot harder than the rest. A smooth passing game in Super Soccer is only possible with a lot of practice. Especially a lob with the Y button can surprise the opponent.

Others

  • The player names are all fictional in nature (based on the first names of the original players of the time, as the development company Human did not buy a license to use the player names, e.g. Lotar (sic!) Or Rudi in Germany, Diego in Argentina or Edson in Brazil).
  • After every match won in tournament mode, the player receives an eight-digit code consisting of arrows so that the game can be restarted at this point at any time without having to start again. This password is entered in the event of a penalty shootout. If it is correct, the shooter hits; if the password is incorrect, the shot fails.
  • In addition to the game against the AI , it is also possible in Super Soccer to compete against another human player or to play with him against the program.
  • There is a special melody for each team, which is played in the half-time in which the team has kick-off.
  • After the victory in the final against the supposedly strongest team Germany (or Argentina), a surprise awaits the player. During the award ceremony, the referee appears and steals the trophy on the grounds that you would only be a champion if you could beat your Nintendo team (playing in completely black jerseys).
  • In two-player mode, player 2 has the option of choosing the Nintendo team as the playable team. To do this, he must hold down the start button when confirming his team and confirm with the B button. In addition, two identical teams can compete against each other. First the Nintendo team is selected by player 2, then player 1 moves to the Nintendo team that has just been selected and player 2 withdraws from his selection. This means that both players can play against each other with the same team (e.g. Brazil – Brazil). This applies to all teams except for the Nintendo team. One team then plays in the original jersey and the other in the away jersey. However, they do not differ in terms of skill level.
  • In the penalty shootout, you can shoot the ball harder and thus give the goalkeeper fewer chances. To do this, you have to take the shot with the B button and press the B button again just before the player shoots. The ball hits the goal many times faster.
  • You can also cut the ball in a penalty shoot-out. To do this, the L and R buttons are required when executing the shot. With L you cut the ball on the left and with R the ball on the right.
